Job Title: Principal Cloud Infrastructure Engineer (GCP & DevOps, Life Sciences)

Location: United States Remote / Some Boston and/or San Diego travel may be required during the engagement

    Overview
At our Biotech client, data is its most valuable asset. We are hiring a Principal Cloud Infrastructure Engineer to advise on the evolution of the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) ecosystem. You will be the architect and executor (hands on) of a secure, "science-ready" cloud environment that bridges the gap between high-performance computational chemistry and regulated clinical data requirements. Your goal is to mature the GCP infrastructure incrementally, ensuring that every deployment is automated, secure, and compliant.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Infrastructure Strategy & Governance: Define the roadmap for GCP services (Compute Engine, GKE, BigQuery, Vertex AI). Advise on "Buy vs. Build" decisions for GCP-native tools versus third-party integrations.
    • DevOps & Automation: Lead the transition to a 100% Infrastructure as Code (IaC) environment using Terraform. Build and maintain robust CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitHub Actions, Cloud Build) for both internal tools and scientific workflows.
    • Security & Compliance: Implement and enforce a Zero Trust security model. Design VPC Service Controls, IAM hierarchies, and Cloud Armor policies.
    • Incremental Maturity: Rather than "boiling the ocean," you will identify high-impact, low-friction improvements to our current stack, migrating legacy manual processes to automated, scalable cloud-native solutions.
    • Technical Advisory: Act as the internal "GCP Guru" for our data scientists and chemists, helping them optimize their high-compute workloads (e.g., AlphaFold runs, molecular dynamics) for cost and performance.

    Required Qualifications

    • Experience: 5+ years of dedicated experience in Cloud Engineering/DevOps, with at least 3+ years specifically on Google Cloud Platform.
    • Technical Depth: Expert-level proficiency with Terraform, Kubernetes (GKE), and Docker.
    • Security Mindset: Strong understanding of cloud networking (Shared VPCs, Interconnect) and identity management (Okta integration, GCP IAM).
    • Industry Context: Previous experience in Life Sciences, Biotech, or Healthcare
    • Solid Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) knowledge: experience in working on High Performance Compute (HPC) using GPUs.
    • Education: B.S./M.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
    • Strong Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with a broad set of stakeholders on complex topics in a remote work environment.
    • Nice to have: Validated Environments (GxP): Ability to advise on cloud infrastructure meeting "Validated State" requirements (SOC2, HIPAA, and GxP compliance) for clinical-stage data, ensuring reproducibility and auditability of scientific results.

    Preferred Tools & Tech Stack

    • IaC: Terraform / Terragrunt
    • CI/CD: GitHub Actions, ArgoCD
    • Observability: GCP Operations Suite (Stackdriver), Datadog, or New Relic
    • Data/AI: BigQuery, Vertex AI, Nextflow (for scientific pipelines)
    • Compliance: Vanta or Drata integration experience

VP of Engineering

“Working with Buxton was awesome, recruiters were very attentive to the needs of my team. They listened and changed the strategy for screening candidates based on my team’s needs. They were very flexible in terms of the contract given Spigit was a very small company. I would love to utilize their services again in the future.”

“I worked for Buxton Consulting as a full time employee for about 5 years between 2013 and 2018.  I worked on various managed projects, inhouse and at client end.  Buxton was very professional in all their dealings with the employee and clients.  The HR team and my Client Relations Manager, always had regular interactions and feedback sessions with me to discuss the project and personal goals. Buxton also handled my Visa and Immigration related work with thorough professionalism and I never had any issues with that. I would definitely recommend Buxton Consulting as an employer and also for short and long term managed projects.”
